9/1 Wed Russian Visitors arrive
6:14PM and 10:15PM O'Hare Airport - Refreshments at O'Hare Hilton for early guests.
9/2 Thu   Local Bolingbrook

-   9:00AM Breakfast with Householder's and their guests.
- 10:00AM Administrative Assistant Peggy Drey gave Tour of Village Hall.
- 10:30AM Met with Village Mayor Roger Claar with question and answer session. Mayor Claar presents Russian visitors with Beanie Babies from local Bolingbrook Beanie Baby warehouse.

- 11:15AM Village Police Dept,  tour of 911 emergency network, Tanya and Svetlana thrown in jail (haha).

- 11:30AM Arena Auto Auction.
-   1:00PM Lunch with local politicians at Branmors Restaurant

-   3:00PM Fire Dept. tour with demonstration of trained dog finding gasoline and Russian vistitors lifted 103 feet into air on extension ladder fire truck.  Visitors presented with T-shirts and mugs.
-   5:00PM Meijers department store tour.

Local McHenry
Sleep in.  Getting acquainted lunch.  Tanya interested in everything plus schools.  Ravil very interested in American business practices and the food industry since he is involved in both the wholesale and retail aspects of it.

- 12:30PM Meeting with Michael Tryon, McHenry County Board Chairman and Virginia Peschke, board member.  Explanation of city, county, and state governments.
- 2:00PM Tour of all departments
- 3:00PM Meeting with Sheriff Keith Nygren.  Ravil presented with a star and made an honorary deputy of McHenry County.  Tour of county jail.
- 3:45PM Sat in on a civil trial in progress
- 4:00PM Tour of the health department.
- 5:30PM Aerial tour of McHenry County and Lake Geneva area 
- 8:30PM Dinner at Hackney's Restaurant with relatives.

-   6:00PM Navy Pier IMAX T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous 3-D movie on 6 story high screen.
 Toured Navy Pier.  Rode on giant 150 foot high ferris wheel.

9/4 Sat Local Bolingbrook

- 9:00AM Breakfast  with Pastor Royal Speidel and his wife Rita at Cracker Barrel Restaurant
- 3:00PM Interview and Photos of Russian visitors and host families with local newspaper Bolingbrook Sun.
- 4:00PM Park District Tour with Ray Ochromowicz.  Answered questions on reasons for a park district and how it is funded.
- 8:00PM Bolingbrook fireworks display .
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Local McHenry
House tour and explanation of all systems to Ravil.  Ravil mows the lawn.  He explained Russian utilities and electric system.
- 10:00AM  Tour of Jewel Food Stores
- 11:00AM  Tour of Crystal Lake Gymnastics Facility with owner, Lee Battaglia.  Business discussion of economics of facility, apparel shop, and vending.  Ravil interested in markup, volume, break even point, etc.
-  1:30PM Lunch at Chili's.  Explanation by Gary of American Construction business.  Costs vs. receipts, taxes, etc.
-  2:30PM Tour of Crystal Lake Ice Hockey Rink
-  3:30PM Shopping at Target
-  5:30PM Boat trip of the Fox River
9/5 Sun - 9:00AM Russian guests attend local Methodist church services with host families. 

Woodfield Mall Tour 
While enroute, Ravil talked to Vitaly Sherbo, Russian Olympic star, in Russian about how his gymnastic business operates in Las Vegas

- 2:30PM Mall Tour and "Shop 'til ya drop" part 2.  Russian visitors presented with VIP cases by Maul Security.
- McHenry visitors,  Ravil and Tanya spend night in Bolingbrook with Rich and Lynn Shimkus and Gail Illingworth.

-   6:30PM Old Country Buffet,  White Oaks Mall - dinner arranged by Sidna Young, administrative assistant to the United Methodist District Superintendant, Kathleen McCafferty. Dinner with Methodists Sidna, Lana and Igor Slobodyanyuk from the Ukraine, and Billie Vuylsteke.  Men spend the night with the Slobodyanyuks while women go with Billie.
9/8 Wed   University of Illinois Tour, Urbana-Champaign Illinois

-   9:00AM Attend Dr. Jonathan Ludwig's third year Russian language class.  Visitors presented with U of I tee shirts from the Slavic Dept. 
- 10:00AM Meeting with Dr. Maurice Friedberg, Chair of the Slavic Dept. and Richard Tempest, faculty.  Visitors were again able to converse all in Russian.  Much laughter and discussion among them.
- 11:00AM Meet Lynda Park, Assistant Director of the Russian and East European Center, who has made arrangements for the afternoon.
- 11:15AM Meeting with Michael T. Charles, Professor and Director of the Police Training Institute. Mick is one of two honorary Russian Colonels in the U.S. because of his work in training Russian police officers in democratic policing methods.  Discussion of corruption in Russia and how business leaders can help.
- 12:30PM Meeting with Dr. Mark Steinberg, Professor of history and Director of the Russian and East European Center and Dr. Peter Maggs, Law Professor who worked on the Russian civil code as well as the Armenian, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz codes.  This meeting was again all in Russian and most interesting to our visitors.
-   1:30PM Lunch on the Engineering Campus.
-   2:45PM University of Illinois Bookstore

-   5:00PM Tour of Richard and Jan Miller Hog Farm  in Forrest, IL.  Pork chop dinner

9/9 Thu   Back to Chicago
- 10:30AM Visited Borders Book Store, viewed architecture and "Cows on Parade".
- 12:00PM Tanya and Svetlana spent the afternoon on their own shopping ("Shop 'til ya drop - part 3") They shopped until 7:00PM.  Norstrom's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Water Tower Place,  Filene's Basement on Chicago's Magnificent Mile.

  Chicago Tribune
Aleksandr (Sasha) is a journalist with a political digest in Russia and this was an especially important tour for him.
-   1:00PM Sasha met with volunteer Russian translator Emil Trakhtenberg,  Senior Engineer, Experimental Facilities Div. of Argonne National Laboratory.  Sasha had a private tour of the Chicago Tribune Freedom Center where the newspapers are printed.  He had many questions on printing procedures, collating machines and brands of ink.  He was given names and contacts for ordering newspaper supplies. 
-   2:45PM Sasha sat in on the National Planning Meeting,  accompanied by Tim McNulty,  Foreign Editor of the Chicago Tribune. This meeting was closed to the public.
-   4:00PM Sasha attended the "Page One Meeting" where he saw first-hand the next days front page stories being finalized.
-   9:00PM Back to Householder's in Bolingbrook for dinner by Sylvia Cowsert and a visit with Jain's sister and neice who had just returned from a two year stay in St. Petersburg Russia. 

Local McHenry
- 10:00AM Cooper Kiddee College.  Tour of the preschool facility and kitchen with Director Diana Weber.
- 11:00AM Valley View Elementary School tour with Principal, Patti McCrystal.  Tanya taught a first grade classroom to say "goodbye" in Russian. Differences between the 2 educational systems discussed.
- 12:00PM Lunch and shopping
-   3:00PM Tour of Sullivan Foods by owner, Tom Sullivan.  Tom explained to Ravil his grocery store operation and the economics of it. 
-  6:00PM Shopping at Spring Hill Mall.
 
 
 

 

9/10 Fri DuPage County Facilities
- 10:00AM DuPage County Courthouse.
- 11:00AM County home visit
- 12:00PM Bob and Sasha tour Wheaton, IL.
-   1:00PM Tanya and Svetlana shop some more at Oak Brook Mall (these girls really love to shop.... and they haven't dropped yet!!!).
Local McHenry
- 10:00AM Shopping at local stores Tour of Sam's Club Warehouse 
- 12:00PM Lunch at Walker's Pancake House.  Last minute shopping!
-   2:00PM Metting with Chuck Miller, Jr. and tour of Miller Formless Company which designs and manufactures slip forming equipment for the concrete industry.
  Local Wheaton
- 6:00PM Farewell dinner at Cowsert's.  Great home cooked dinner.  Nice gifts were exchanged.  Very emotional goodbyes were said.
9/11 Sat Russian Visitors departure
10:10AM and 12:00PM O'Hare Airport - our friends depart.
